HISTORY & HERITAGE

Built in 1824 - Toftcombs has welcomed many notable guests during its time as a former hotel and private residence. Until 1832 the House formed part of a large estate belonging to Vice Admiral Charles Fleming of Biggar and Cumbernauld. At that time the House, known as Wester Toftcombs, the farm of Easter Toftcombs and Mid Toftcombs were bought by John Liddle of West Mains.
These were tenanted by four generations of the Gladstone family, later made famous by the British Prime Minister, William Gladstone.
George Orwell resided at the house in May 1946 as a guest of his friend Georges Kopp who was his commander in the Spanish civil war. We are looking forward to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the publication of Nineteen Eighty Four with the Orwell Society at Toftcombs in October 2019.
